The resurrective ability of plants is one of their many wonders. While it has been a tough summer for some gardens, rain returning to the East has shown that plants are very good at modulating their growth to the weather and you’ll hopefully have been surprised by how much has picked back up. Warm days and damp soil are the perfect conditions for fast root establishment, and that makes now a great time for planting.
Autumn is peak season here at the nursery with plants growing strongly, flowering well, and looking wonderful in the increasingly angled light. Late season stalwarts like Rudbeckia, Helenium, and Coreopsis are in full flower. Our many Asters are yet to start flowering, and will soon look wonderful against a backdrop of perennial grasses. Stately umbels of Selinum wallichianum rise above the soft flowing texture of Hakonechloa macra under the ripening hawthorn; while in the sun, the papery flowers of Anaphalis transnokoensis rustle in the breeze, sitting beautifully with the late flushes of Salvia and Nepeta. Shrubs and trees too are looking increasingly good. There is the potential for spectacular colour this autumn, with mild days and a little more moisture following the sugar-red energy of all that sun. Japanese maples, Viburnum, Sorbus, and Liquidambar, Stachyurus, Cotinus, Acer griseum, and Prunus serrula are all poised for a great display, and are suitable for virtually every garden.
