Join us for our annual Mount Venus Nursery Autumn Sale, Saturday September 21st to Sunday October 6th.

Monday – Saturday 10am – 6pm

Sunday 12pm – 5pm

All plants reduced by 20% and all pots by 10%, plus some special offers available throughout the sale period. Many great varieties in flower and a good time for planting.

The cool mornings and warm afternoons of early autumn are perhaps the nicest time to be in the nursery. The flowering season clings on in the grasses, and prairie plants, while the Asters just begin. All this, even the fading summer flowers look their best in perfect evening light, falling at flattering angles, picking up details that are easy to miss in the oversaturated light of July and August.

This is partly why we choose September to have out autumn sale. But also to make the point that the season has plenty of life left in it. And even spent flowers contribute to the look of a garden, the seed heads and changing colours an integral part of the autumn experience. Autumn is about the passing of time and the value of ephemerality. The fall is as divine as the rise.

There are plenty of plants to consider for the autumn garden, and it is a fine time to plant perennials in the still warm soil for the future years. Plants like Helenium presage the warm autumn colours with their reds and yellows. The fabulous haze of Bupleurum falcatum lasts for weeks and combines wonderfully with other fine flowers like those of Origanum laevigatum or Verbena, or more substantial contrasts like Agastache and Echinacea.

The Sanguisorbas are magnificent garden plants, with an array of windsock or bottlebrush flowers suspended floating in the air. They are insect-friendly and provide informal height and texture over a long period. Persicaria amplexicaulis carry the season with flowers through August and September in a variety of colours. They form handsome clumps in heavy soil and some sun.

However you combine them, autumn is the perfect setting for perennial plants, and a wonderful time to avail of our autumn sale, Saturday September 21st to Sunday October 6th.
